Nigeria Launches Nationwide AI Training Programme to Strengthen Cancer Care

The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has launched a nationwide capacity-building programme aimed at training healthcare workers on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer care.

The initiative, which will be implemented across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, is designed to equip health professionals with practical skills for using AI in cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.

Speaking at the launch, the Director-General of NICRAT, Professor Usman Aliyu who was represented by Dr. Akanni Oluwasegun, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist in the Department of Clinical Services—said the programme underscores the institute’s leadership role in strengthening cancer control, research and treatment in Nigeria.

Professor Aliyu noted that artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly transform cancer care by improving diagnostic accuracy, speeding up clinical decision-making and supporting personalised treatment plans. He added that AI is already reshaping healthcare globally by identifying high-risk populations and enabling more targeted interventions.

According to him, the training will involve intensive sessions and robust knowledge-sharing among participants, with the aim of creating a ripple effect that will strengthen cancer care delivery nationwide, improve survival rates and reduce the burden of the disease on patients and their families.

Speaking, the lead consultant for the training, Dr. Maurice Nimark, said the workshop is designed to expose healthcare workers to the growing relevance of AI in medicine, particularly in oncology.

He explained that AI and machine learning technologies can support faster and more precise treatment planning, while continuously improving outcomes through data-driven analysis.

Speaking earlier, Dr. Nentawe Gurumdimma, of the Department of Computer science, University of Jos, said the common myth about is that not all AI thinks like humans, not all replaces job, but has replaced many. Adding that it can support clinical decisions and enhances diagnosis.

He recommends practical high quality data robust reporting human AI collaboration for cervical cancer.

Our correspondent reports that the Three days programme will feature hands-on training, collaboration and experience sharing among participants, with the overarching goal of improving cancer care outcomes across the country and restoring hope to patients affected by the disease.
