Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that Nigeria can no longer afford excuses in the face of rising insecurity, as citizens continue to suffer from banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks.

Speaking on Friday at the second edition of the Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival, held at the Ten Commandments Prayer Altar in Du, Jos South, the former president expressed deep concern over what he described as the government’s failure to adequately protect its people.

Obasanjo said Nigeria must be willing to seek international help if its internal capacity is insufficient, questioning why modern technologies such as satellite imaging and drones are not fully deployed to combat criminal activities.

He condemned the incessant abductions—especially of schoolchildren—and insisted that excuses based on religion, ethnicity, or regional interests have no place when lives are being lost.

While urging Nigerians to remain prayerful, he stressed that prayer must be matched with deliberate action and accountability from leaders.

Obasanjo, however, commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for sustaining the Unity Christmas Carols, describing the programme as divinely inspired and capable of fostering peace and cohesion. He encouraged the state to develop the festival into a global tourism event.

Governor Mutfwang, in his response, thanked the former president and noted the presence of dignitaries, including former ministers, senior judicial officers, and retired military leaders.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to unity, peace, and preserving Plateau’s cultural heritage.

Our correspondent reports that the 2025  Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival runs from the 28th to the 30th of November, aimed at strengthening peace and rebuilding relationships across the state.
