The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has warmly welcomed the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing his defection as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The coalition said Obi’s move represents a significant shift toward principled politics, integrity, and people-centred governance, noting that his decision has rekindled hope for a credible and values-driven opposition in the country.
Speaking to journalists at these NUJ Press Centre in Jos, COPDEM National Chairman, Prince Rwang Pam Jr., alongside other members of the group, said the coalition’s support for the ADC and Peter Obi was deliberate and strategic.
He explained that COPDEM is a political action group committed to protecting the interests of Nigerians, adding that its alignment with the ADC is aimed at strengthening nationwide mobilisation for Obi and other like-minded political actors joining the party to build a vibrant and effective opposition.
Prince Pam disclosed that COPDEM, with a membership base of over five million Nigerians, shares core values with the ADC and Peter Obi, including democracy, social justice, accountability, and the fight against corruption.
According to him, the ADC is positioning itself as a movement driven by young people, workers, and marginalized groups, with a strong emphasis on competence, character, and capacity in leadership.
He further stressed the need for unity, hope, and collective action in the quest for a better Nigeria, calling on citizens to join COPDEM and participate actively in the struggle for a just, inclusive, and democratic nation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
