No fewer than 30 people have reportedly died as a result of boat mishap in Borgu local government area of Niger state.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency NSEMA confirmed the figure in a statement signed by the Director General of the Agency Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, and made it available to news men through public relations officer of the Agency Hussaini Ibrahim in Minna
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025 at about 11:30am which was caused overloading and also attributed to collision with a tree stump in the river.
According to him, “NSEMA has received a report of boat mishap incident at a community called Gausawa in Malale ward of Borgu LGA.”
The Director General added that their Desk Officer who lead the search and rescue operations, noted that the boat took off from Tugan- Sule community in Shagunu ward with 90 passengers on board which includes women and children heading towards Dugga for a condolence visit.
Findings revealed that 29 dead bodies have been recovered while 50 persons were rescued alive and 2 people still missing at the time of filling this report.
The search and rescue operations are still on going for possible recovery of missing persons.
