No fewer than, 194,054 young Pupils across 750 schools and 2,522 teachers have benefitted from structured pedagogy training, coaching and routine lesson support by Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) programme in Jigawa state.
This was announced during a presentation of Jigawa state 2025 learning assessment outcomes conducted by PLANE funded by UK Government as part of continue effort to support Jigawa state in strengthen long it’s education system and improve foundational learning outcomes.
According to the findings, in the year 3 which marked the midpoint of the PLANE programme on supporting Jigawa state in strengthening the literacy and numeracy skills of children in primary 1 to 4 across seven local government areas of Dutse, Gagarawa, Jahun, Kafin Hausa, Malam Madori, Taura and ‘YanKwashi.
The outcomes shows that, Numeracy continue to lead as 76.8% of primary 2 and 4 learners reached exceeded foundational Numeracy, and 78.5% of learners previously at begginer level have move up to higher level, while primary 4 results are strongest with 91% of learners meeting foundational Numeracy expectations.
While the development on Literacy shows improvement especially in primary 4 as 57.6% of primary 2 and primary 4 learners met foundational literacy expectations and there was 77.5% rediuction in the number of learners previously at begginer level, while primary 4 showed the clearest gains in reading accuracy and oral fluency, with 72% of them reaching or exceeding foundational literacy.
The results further indicated that English literacy is gaining ground despite the absence of direct English instruction under PLANE in Jigawa, there was a 72.2% reduction beginner-level English learners, while 32% learners have reached or exceeded foundational English literacy milestone.
However, the outcomes recommended strengthen ongoing teachers support, reduce of systemic pressures affecting learning, continue and formalize the accelerated learning holiday camps and re-strategise year 20 action Plans to sustain the gains and address the challenges.
While delivering his speech, the Deputy National State Team Lead of PLANE, Dr. Samuel Achimugu, said the objectives of the midline learning outcomes dissemination workshop is to engage stakeholders in understanding pupil’s learning achievements and progress Over the three years of PLANE program, and to disseminate midline learning assessment outcomes as well as to collaborate with stakeholders to re strategize on the Achievements accomplished on Year 2 actionable plan.
He then commended the Jigawa State Government for collaborating with PLANE to improve literacy and numeracy among Jigawa pupil’s.
