The outgoing chairman of People Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State, Christopher Hassan, has disclosed that the wave of defection rocking the party is a temporary setback.
Hassan on Friday at the party Secretariat in Jos tasked PDP loyalists to remain resolute and steadfast in promoting the party’s idles until they reclaim all positions in 2027 elections.
He said when they came on board the party was on opposition with daunting challenges having come out from election season which according to him they have chose the path of reconciliation and inclusion.
“We reached out to aggrieved members, closed old wounds, and built bridges of understanding that turned us once again into one big family.
“With that renewed unity, we confronted the ruling party then (APC) not with bitterness, but with conviction, conviction that Plateau state deserved better. We conducted peaceful and transparent primaries ahead of the 2023 general elections. Those primaries laid the foundation for one of the most remarkable political comeback in our history.
“The PDP went on to wrestle power from the then-ruling party, winning the governorship seat, 2 senatorial seats, 5 House of Representatives seats, and 16 State Assembly seats. That victory was not just political, it was moral. It affirmed the faith of the Plateau people in the PDP’s capacity to restore good governance, accountability, and peace”, he noted.
The outgoing chairman identified Appellate Court judgement over the National and State Assembly’s seats as a painful moment for democracy.
“Yet we remained calm and kept faith in the judiciary. In the end, the Supreme Court vindicated us, upheld our governorship mandate, and reaffirmed the will of the Plateau people, proving that truth, though delayed, always triumphs.”
While appreciating PDP loyalists for their sacrifice, zeal, and resilience, Hassan charged the incoming state executive committee to build on the unity they have nurtured, protect the integrity of the party, and remain close to the grassroots nothing that, “therein lies our strength.”
