Nigeria’s defence minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, stated the reason behind his resignation from Defence Minister of the federal Republic of Nigeria.

“In a letter dated December 1, sent to President Bola Tinubu, Abubakar said he was quitting on health grounds”, the Ex-Jigawa Minister stated.

President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation.

However in a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy announced the resignation of the minister.

The said, Badaru tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President was said to have accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for the minister’s service to the nation.

“This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga,” the report noted.

President Tinubu is expected to forward the name of a new nominee for the office to the Senate later this week.

Badaru, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.

His resignation comes at a sensitive time, as President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency and is expected to give further details on its scope and implementation in the coming days.
