The Katsina State Government has commenced a major initiative aimed at overhauling Quranic (Makarantun Allo) and Almajiri education systems across the state, as part of broader efforts to modernize non-formal Islamic education and improve student welfare.
As part of the reform, the Katsina State Bureau of Statistics has organized a training workshop for enumerators who will be responsible for conducting a statewide census of Quranic schools and almajiri students. The training session was held at the Old Government House Conference Hall in Katsina.
Speaking during the training, the Statistician General of Katsina State, Professor Saifullahi Sani Matazu, explained that the training is part of preparations for data collection that will inform the state’s educational planning and policymaking on tsangaya and almajiri education system.
“The aim of this training is to equip enumerators with the necessary skills and techniques to accurately gather data on Quranic schools, student numbers, their needs, and challenges,” Professor Matazu stated.
He added that the information collected will guide the state government in formulating policies to support Quranic and Tsangaya education, enhance learning conditions, and address existing challenges in the system.
The Statistician General also noted that the reform will include the provision of shelters and farmlands to almajiri students, allowing them to grow their own food and reduce street begging. Vocational training and direct support for teachers and students are also part of the initiative.
“Enumerators will cover various types of Islamic schools, including traditional Quranic schools, Tsangaya schools, Islamiyya institutions, and schools that integrate Islamic and Western education.
This initiative reflects the commitment of the administration of Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda to inclusive educational development and the welfare of all learners in Katsina State.
