UNICEF, EU Targets 800 Learners To Assess Reading/Arithmetic Ability in Jigawa

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with support From European Union (EU) concluded arrangements to commence Reading and Arithmetic assessment of primary School pupils in Jigawa State.

This was announced by a consultant Early grade assessment to UNICEF Mr Farouk Aliyu while speaking to news men at four days four days training of Assessors on how to conduct assessment, held at Tahir Guest Palace Dutse jigawa state.

He explained that, EU and UNICEF is supporting education system in Jigawa and Nigeria for many years on teacher training, provision of learning and teaching materials with aims to achieve standards education for every child.

“Now we decided to assess the status of children learning in schools, status of reading and Arithmetic skills acquired over the time of our intervention as we targeted 800 pupils of primary one and two teachers (Mathematics and Hausa), in each school,” he said.

According to him, the target is to understand or to have knowledge of reading and Mathematical ability of the children in the early grade level in Jigawa, and to understand how teachers are teaching in the classroom, are following the right procedure they were taught by UNICEF and other educational bodies or not, adding that there is gaps then it will serve as a n avenue for retraining and policy making or even changing the curriculum.

“We trained 67 participants whom will go to the field and collect reliable and valid data  for policy making and other use that support education system in Jigawa”, the consultant said.

Mr Aliyu then added that, the assessment divided into three; early grade reading assessment, early grade Mathematics and lesson delivery which observed how the teachers is teaching in the classroom, how he is delivering the lessons and how learners are learning the lessons.
