In addition to the over 1,500 housing units already under construction by the administration of Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, the governor recently launched the construction of another 53 housing units in the central city of Dutse.
This initiative further demonstrates the state government’s commitment to addressing housing challenges and improving urban development.
Nigeria’s housing deficit remains a serious and growing concern. It is considered one of the largest in the world. According to the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), the country needs to construct approximately 700,000 houses annually for the next two decades to effectively bridge the gap.
With an estimated deficit of about 28 million housing units driven by rapid population growth, urbanization, and inadequate supply, Nigeria faces a crisis affecting both the quantity and quality of available housing. Addressing this challenge requires massive investment, well-designed affordable housing programs, and sustained infrastructural development.
Against this backdrop, Jigawa State’s intervention in mass and affordable housing, strategically distributed across key areas of the state, represents a significant step toward reducing the housing deficit. Such investments are expected to improve living standards, stimulate economic activities, and contribute to the overall social and economic development of the state.
The leadership and strategic direction of the Commissioner for the Ministry of Land and Housing, Hon. Ahmed Garba MK, particularly in overseeing the development of the 53 housing units in central Dutse, are commendable. The choice of location and the quality of the ongoing work reflect thoughtful planning and a commitment to modern urban standards.
However, it remains essential for the government and the supervising ministry to maintain strict adherence to quality standards and ensure that the projects are supported by adequate infrastructure.
Sustainable housing development is not only about increasing numbers but also about delivering durable, well-defined communities that promote social stability and long-term economic growth.
