As part of effort to support the move of addressing climate change challenges, the chairman of Malam-Madori local government council in Jigawa State, Alhaji Salisu Sani Haruna Garun-Gabas has presented the allocation of twelve hectares of land to Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS).
The allocation was presented to Red Cross Society during the review meeting of the enhancing Draught Resilience and landscape restoration in Northern Nigeria project, funded by Global Climate Resilience Platform Fund (GCRP-F).
The local government chairman who was represented by his vice chairperson Hajiya Amina Haruna Dokajo said, Malam-Madori local government is luckily one of the four local government areas selected by Red Cross Society for the projects.
According to her, some months back the team of Red Cross Society visited the local government and requested for land to develop farmer’s field schools, training of backyard agriculture/ farming and other climate resilience livelihood approaches in the land.
“Today on behalf of Malam-Madori local government council Chairman, I’m happy to present the allocation of twelve hectares of land, for the purpose of Strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities in our local government areas”, She said.
While delivering his speech at the meeting, the Senior Climate Change Officer of Red Cross Society, Sunday Auwalu Jigawa State was choosing because its among the state that are highly exposed to current drought and prolonged dry spells drought affecting; water availability, Agriculture and food Production.
He added that, other affected factors include household livelihood (sources of food and income), increasing climate variability in creating uncertainty for farming as households community face predictable climate risks that required planned action.
Also speaking, the Livelihood and Community Liaison officer of Red Cross Society, Blessing Chezeram John said, the overall objectives of the project is to strengthen the Resilience of vulnerable communities in Jigawa state to drought and climate variability through; Anticipation action, Locally led adaptation and climate resilience livelihood approaches: VSLA, Backyards agriculture/farming, farmer’s field schools, financial literacy and skills acquisition.
According to her, four local government areas were selected for selected for the projects including Malam-Madori, Maigatari, Kaugama and Sule-tankarkar local government areas in the state.
She then commended Malam-Madori local government chairman for the donations of land to the projects, urging others to emulate for the successful implementation of the projects.
