Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has said the remarkable progress recorded in the state over the years is a testament to the dividends of democracy and the benefits of accountable, people-centred leadership.
In his Democracy Day message issued on Friday, the governor, who is also the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians on the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
He described democracy as Nigeria’s most dependable pathway to sustainable development, noting that the achievements witnessed in Gombe were made possible through deliberate policies, institutional stability and the active participation of citizens in governance.
According to him, landmark projects such as the Network 11-100 Roads Initiative, the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, the Three Arms Zone, the Agro-Livestock Development Zone and ongoing urban renewal programmes have demonstrated how democratic governance can improve the lives of the people.
“Gombe State today stands as a model of what visionary, responsible and inclusive leadership can achieve under a democratic system,” Governor Inuwa said.
While acknowledging the socio-economic and security challenges confronting the nation, he noted that Nigeria’s ability to sustain democratic governance and achieve peaceful transitions of power remains a significant milestone worthy of celebration.
The governor paid tribute to pro-democracy activists and institutions, including the judiciary, legislature, media and civil society organisations, for their sacrifices and contributions to safeguarding and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He also urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to the ideals of justice, accountability and good governance, warning against fake news and divisive narratives as preparations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Despite the prevailing challenges, democracy remains the foundation for peace, participation, development and national progress,” he said.
Governor Inuwa wished Nigerians a peaceful, memorable and fulfilling Democracy Day celebration.
