The Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar  Namadi has congratulated Nigerians and the people of Jigawa State on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a crucial moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who stood firmly for justice, freedom and the right of citizens to choose their leaders.

This was contained in a message signed by Hamisu Mohammed Gumel the

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor adding that, Democracy Day provides an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic journey, the progress recorded over the years, and the collective responsibility of leaders and citizens in strengthening democratic institutions.

According to the Governor, the significance of June 12 extends beyond a date on the national calendar, as it represents courage, conviction and the enduring belief that the will of the people must remain the foundation of governance.

“Today, we remember and honour the men and women whose sacrifices helped shape the democratic Nigeria we have today. Their struggles remind us that democracy is not merely about elections. It is about building institutions that command public confidence, upholding the rule of law, protecting the rights of citizens and ensuring that government remains accountable to the people.”

Governor Namadi stated that while Nigeria’s democratic experience has not been without challenges, the country has continued to make steady progress through dialogue, constitutional order and the resilience of its people.

He further stated that democracy places a solemn responsibility on those entrusted with leadership to govern with humility, fairness and a sincere commitment to the public good.

Reflecting on developments in Jigawa State, the Governor said his administration has continued to pursue a people-centered approach to governance anchored on consultation, openness and responsiveness to the needs of citizens.

He stated that the administration’s 12-Point Development Agenda was conceived not as a political slogan but as a practical framework for addressing the aspirations of the people in critical sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, economic development, social protection and environmental sustainability.

“Over the past three years, we have remained focused on creating opportunities for our people, expanding access to quality education and healthcare, transforming the agricultural sector, investing in infrastructure and strengthening social support systems for the most vulnerable members of our society.

“Our objective has always been to ensure that the benefits of government are felt in communities across the state and that public resources are utilised in a manner that reflects the priorities of our people.”

The Governor further stated that peace and stability remain among Jigawa State’s greatest assets, noting that development can only be attained in an environment where lives and property are secure.

He commended traditional institutions, religious leaders, community organisations, security agencies and citizens for their continued contributions towards preserving harmony and social cohesion across the state.

Governor Namadi also used the occasion to call on citizens to continue embracing the values that sustain democratic societies, including tolerance, respect for differing opinions, civic responsibility and active participation in community development.

“Democracy thrives when citizens remain engaged, informed and committed to the common good. Nation-building is not the responsibility of government alone. It requires the contributions of every citizen through lawful conduct, hard work, patriotism and respect for our shared values.”

The Governor expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, saying the country’s strength lies in the resilience, diversity and determination of its people.

He also reaffirmed his support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that cooperation among all levels of government remains essential for addressing national challenges and advancing development.

“As we commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, let us renew our faith in the democratic ideals that bind us together as one people. Let us continue to work for a society where justice prevails, opportunities are expanded, and every citizen has a stake in our collective progress.

“I pray for the continued peace, unity and prosperity of Jigawa State and our dear country, Nigeria. May we remain guided by wisdom, strengthened by our diversity and inspired by a common desire to build a nation that future generations will be proud to inherit.”

Governor Namadi thanked the people of Jigawa State for their continued support, understanding and cooperation, assuring them that his administration will remain guided by the principles of accountability, service and respect for the public trust.
