The Jigawa State governor Malam Umar Namadi has called for a strong collaborative efforts between governments, Traditional institutions, Religious leaders, security agencies, Civil Society Organizations and citizens to address challenges of Insecurities, unemployment, Farmers-herds conflicts and drugs abuse in the Northern region.
Governor Namadi, made the call while delivering his speech at 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) held at Banquet hall, Government house Dutse.
He explained that, Northern Nigeria continues to face serious development challenges, including insecurity, poverty, youth unemployment, climate pressures, farmer-herder conflicts, drug abuse, out-of-school children, and weakening community values.
“Addressing these requires sustained cooperation among State Governments, traditional institutions, religious leaders, civil society, security agencies, and citizens. In this regard, we commend the Northern States Governors’ Forum for promoting stronger collective action and deeper collaboration with the Councils of Traditional Rulers towards lasting peace, security, stability, and development in the region”, he said .
According to him, the 8th Executive Committee Meeting with a the theme, “Peace, Unity and Development of the North.” renewed collective commitment to regional stability and progress, and affirms the continuing relevance of traditional institutions in public life and governance.
He maintained that, the meeting also reflects a broad regional mandate. It also underscores the vital role of traditional institutions as custodians of culture, promoters of peace, and trusted links between government and the people.
“Since our assumption of office, we have pursued responsible, people-centred governance, with peace and security at the heart of our 12-Point Agenda and the broader vision of making a Greater Jigawa. We recognise that sustainable progress is best achieved through participatory governance and close collaboration with traditional institutions, religious leaders, community structures, and other stakeholders.
“As we all know, Northern Nigeria continues to face serious development challenges, including insecurity, poverty, youth unemployment, climate pressures, farmer-herder conflicts, drug abuse, out-of-school children, and weakening community values. Addressing these requires sustained cooperation among State Governments, traditional institutions, religious leaders, civil society, security agencies, and citizens. In this regard, we commend the Northern States Governors’ Forum for promoting stronger collective action and deeper collaboration with the Councils of Traditional Rulers towards lasting peace, security, stability, and development in the region” ,he said.
The governor then recognised the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to find lasting solutions to insecurity, not only in the Northwest but across the North and Nigeria as a whole. We appreciate the renewed commitment to intensified military and intelligence operations, improved coordination among security agencies, and stronger collaboration with State Governments.
Governor Namadi added that, the Northwest Peace and Security Summit, held in Katsina, brought together Federal and State actors, traditional institutions, and development partners, thereby further strengthening regional cooperation. “While we remain optimistic that lasting peace and security will return, these efforts must be sustained, with faith that Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, will answer our prayers”.
The governor also commended the Council for consistently placing peace and security at the centre of its engagements. From the 7th Executive Committee Meeting in Maiduguri, themed “Enhanced Security as Panacea for Stability and Development of the North,” to the 2025 General Assembly in Birnin Kebbi, themed “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria,” the message has remained clear: peace, security, and stability are indispensable, and stronger cooperation between traditional rulers and government is absolutely necessary.
