Your name stands alongside that of President Olusegun Obasanjo in the annals of Nigerian history: both of you led this nation in khaki and agbada.
One year has passed since your departure, Baba, and Nigerians still mourn. May your soul rest in peace.
Sir, I write to you from the living world with a heavy heart. This letter carries news of the suffering of three of your political sons — men who once wielded considerable power within your party, the APC, and your government. The shelter you built for them has collapsed; the bonds you tied have unraveled. Some of your children now fight one another. What follows is an abridged account of their fates; a fuller letter will follow.
Malam Nasir El-Rufai: Your fearless son, the former Governor of Kaduna State, now finds himself in serious trouble with the APC and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as with Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna.
Many Nigerians are astonished at how the friendship between Nasir, Tinubu, and El-Rufai has soured to this bitter end. It seems only in Nigeria can loyalty so quickly become its opposite.
In summary, Nasir faces court cases brought by the ICPC, the DSS, and the Kaduna State Government, most centered on corruption allegations. He remains in custody, unable to secure bail for over three months.
Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN: Your former Attorney General and Minister of Justice has also spent months under arrest. Many of his assets have been confiscated.
Though currently out on bail, he faces grave corruption allegations involving billions of Naira. He has since left the APC.
Eng. Saleh Mamman: Your former Minister of Power was sentenced to 75 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Abuja for money laundering and the diversion of ₦33.8 billion.
Sir, to refresh your memory: these were funds your administration had earmarked for hydroelectric projects, specifically, the Mambilla and Zungeru power plants.
