From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse

‎A final-year student from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Federal University Dutse (FUD), Daha Muhammad Albakari has invented an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fire Detection and Prevention System, called AI FIRE SYSTEM.

This was confirmed in a statement signed by the Ag Public affairs Alhaji Abdullahi Yahaya Bello and made it available to news men.

Albakari explained that the AI FIRE SYSTEM is an Artificial Intelligence-powered fire detection and prevention solution that combines computer vision, embedded AI, Internet of Things (IoT) and environmental sensing to provide fast, accurate, and intelligent fire detection.

‎According to him, AI FIRE SYSTEM represents a significant advancement over traditional fire alarms, which typically activate only when smoke or heat is detected by a sensor.

Instead, this innovative system employs artificial intelligence to continuously analyze visual and environmental data in real time and by doing so, it can identify potential fire hazards at an earlier stage, significantly reducing the likelihood of false alarms and enhancing the ability to respond swiftly and effectively in emergencies.

‎He said that current fire detection systems rely primarily on smoke or heat sensors, which are reactive rather than proactive and often generate false alarms caused by cooking smoke, steam, or dust and provide limited information for decision-making, adding that most systems cannot intelligently analyze the environment, assess risk levels, or communicate meaningful alerts to users.

‎Albakari stated that he was motivated by the urgent need for an affordable, intelligent, and locally developed solution that could detect fire hazards earlier and provide actionable information before small incidents escalate into major disasters.

‎He highlited that AI FIRE SYSTEM uses an ESP32-CAM to capture real-time images while environmental sensors monitor temperature and gas concentration, adding that qn embedded AI model analyzes these inputs to classify fire, smoke, or normal conditions and determine the level of risk.

‎According to him, once a potential hazard is detected, the system activates local alarms and can transmit notifications through Wi-Fi or GSM connectivity.

‎Albakari added that the System is designed for homes, schools, hospitals, offices, markets, hotels, warehouses, factories, fuel stations, and other high-risk environments, adding that by leveraging affordable hardware and locally developed AI technology, AI FIRE SYSTEM aims to make intelligent fire safety accessible across Nigeria, contributing to the country’s digital transformation and smart infrastructure development.

‎This initiative aligns with the Vice-Chancellor’s 11-Point Agenda and reflects a strong commitment to promoting a culture of research and innovation among staff and students which FUD is known for, representing a commendable achievement that will increase the University’s visibility and strengthen its position among its peers in the realms of academic excellence and innovative research.
