The Katsina State Irrigation Development Authority (KTIDA) has organised a capacity-building training for chairmen of Water Users Associations from across the state to strengthen the management and sustainability of government-owned irrigation schemes.

The training, held in Katsina, focused on equipping the participants with the knowledge required to effectively manage, protect and maintain irrigation facilities for improved agricultural productivity.

The Managing Director of Ktida, Engineer Saleem Suleman said the training was necessary because irrigation infrastructure could only deliver its full benefits when farmers who depend on the facilities were properly organised and empowered.

He said the chairmen, as leaders of the Water Users Associations, had an important role to play in ensuring responsible use of irrigation facilities and mobilising farmers in their respective communities.

The Managing Director explained that although the state government remained committed to providing and rehabilitating irrigation infrastructure, its sustainability required the active participation of farmers.

He said government would continue to provide infrastructure, policy direction and technical support, while KTIDA would provide professional guidance, supervision and institutional support.

He urged the participants to ensure that irrigation canals, water-control structures, pumps, earth dams, tube wells and other facilities were properly used and protected, stressing that their functionality was directly linked to farmers’ productivity and income.

He assured the associations of KTIDA’s continued engagement and technical support, adding that the authority would continue to advocate improved irrigation infrastructure, rehabilitation of existing facilities, efficient water management and the adoption of modern irrigation technologies.

The Managing Director also expressed appreciation to the Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, for his continued commitment to agricultural development, food security, irrigation expansion and improved livelihoods.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, the Chairman of Nasarawa-Bugaje Water Users Association, Sabiu Danladi, alongside Nura Habu from Mai’adua and Shafi’u Abubakar Machika from Funtua Zone, commended the state government and KTIDA for organising the training.

They said the training had improved their understanding of the responsibilities of the associations and the importance of proper management of irrigation facilities.

The participants pledged to take the knowledge acquired back to their respective associations and sensitise other members on responsible use and protection of irrigation facilities.

They also promised to work with KTIDA to safeguard the irrigation infrastructure and water resources to ensure that the facilities continue to support agricultural production for present and future generations.

The training is part of efforts to strengthen farmer participation in irrigation management and promote sustainable dry-season farming in Katsina State.
