The communities of Hadejia, Auyo and Miga local government areas have commended United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) and European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid for the timely launches of Community Emergency Response Plan (CERP).
The commendation was made by Auyo local government Chairman Alhaji Bilyaminu who spoke on behalf of the communities from Auyo, Hadejia and Miga local government areas at the Launch of the plan held on Tuesday at Auyo Town Hall.
He explained that, the plan as an emergency tools will seriously help in controlling and reducing flood risk through community-based preparedness emergency response.
According to him, the communities three local government of Hadejia, Auyo and Miga experiences both riverine flooding and caused by the overflow of Hadejia river and flash floods resulting from heavy rainfall, poor drainage, and low laying terrain.
He then assured more commitments from both State and local governments to support any partners who are ready to intervene in the area.
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Dr Adamu Babale said, the community response plan was is made possible by Red Cross Society in partnership with UNICEF with support From European Union ECHO, through the extensive commitments of community based volunteers and technical expertise in disaster management.
He said, the plan outlines clear roles for residents, local authorities and emergency agencies, while promoting synergy among local governments, the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), humanitarian organisations and trained volunteers.
While delivering his remarks, Samuel Kaalu the UNICEF Communications Specialist, Kano field office, said Unicef is committed to protect children from any harm including the flooding.
According to him, children are the highest victims of flood in the communities or schools, therefore Unicef is doing everything possible to ensure their safety.
