A Nigerian technocrat, Dr. Ibrahim Jalo Daudu, has called on the Federal Government to formally endorse United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed as Nigeria’s candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General when António Guterres completes his second term in January 2027.

Speaking on the upcoming leadership transition at the UN, Daudu described Mohammed as one of the most qualified candidates, citing her extensive experience in global development, diplomacy and public service.

He said Mohammed played a key role in shaping the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while serving as Special Adviser to former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

He added that, as Deputy Secretary-General since 2017, she has provided leadership on sustainable development, climate action, humanitarian response and multilateral cooperation.

Daudu who is the Tafarkin Gombe also highlighted her contributions to Nigeria, including her service in the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, where she worked on poverty reduction, environmental sustainability and climate policy.

He noted that Mohammed also chaired Gombe State’s transition committee in 2019 following the election of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

According to him, Mohammed’s career has been defined by competence, integrity and service, making her a strong candidate for the UN’s top office.

He urged Nigeria to unite behind her candidacy, saying, “Amina Mohammed has represented Nigeria with distinction and has the experience and credibility to lead the United Nations. Nigeria should rally behind one of its finest daughters for the position of Secretary-General.”
