A Non Governmental Organisation Known as Civil Society Coalition on NIMC/ID4D congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, leadership of NIMC led by Dr. Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the ID4D Project leadership, and the entire NIMC family for the historic assent to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026.
This was contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator/Convener of Civil Society Coalition on NIMC/ID4D Comrade Muhammad Musbahu Basirka adding that this is a landmark development that marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards building a secure, inclusive, and globally competitive digital identity ecosystem.
According to the statement, the effort represents a renewed commitment by the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen the legal and institutional framework guiding digital identity management, data protection, service delivery, and access to essential services for all Nigerians and legal residents.
“As the National Coordinator and Convener of the Civil Society Coalition on NIMC/ID4D, I commend the visionary leadership of the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Dr. Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, whose dedication, strategic direction, and commitment to transforming Nigeria’s identity management landscape have contributed immensely to this historic achievement”.
The statement maintained that, the Coalition also recognizes and appreciates the tremendous efforts of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) Project, under the leadership of its project team, for its continuous support towards expanding inclusive digital identity coverage, improving access, promoting innovation, and ensuring that identity remains a foundation for social and economic development.
The statement added that, signing of the NIMC Act 2026 is not only a legal milestone but also a powerful step towards achieving a more inclusive Nigeria where every citizen can confidently participate in government services, financial inclusion, healthcare, education, and other opportunities enabled by a reliable digital identity system.
“We celebrate the commitment of the management and staff of NIMC, the ID4D Project, development partners, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to advance the national identity agenda”, the statement said.
The group then assured more commitments to support for awareness creation, citizen engagement, accountability, and inclusive participation to ensure that the objectives of this historic legislation translate into meaningful benefits for Nigerians across all communities.
